An enigmatic building at Alexandria Troas
Lot 152
TROAS. Alexandria Troas. Maximus, Caesar, 235/6-238. 'As' (Bronze, 24 mm, 7.45 g, 12 h). IVL MAXIMVS CAE Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Maximus to right, seen from behind. Rev. COL - TRO Victory standing facing on the front of a large building seen in perspective with an arched entryway flanked by two smaller vaults, holding shield over her head with both hands; to left and right, trophies. Bellinger A387. Imhoof-Blumer KM, p. 507, 2 corr. RPC VI online 4060. Extremely rare, the fourth and best known example. Good very fine.

Imhoof-Blumer, who first published this type, interpreted the lines to the left of the archway as two poles or legionary eagles, but this coin clearly shows that they are the side-columns of a large rectangular building shown in perspective, with an additional arcade just barely visible in the background of the right trophy
